 Walter began coaching in Suffield in 1991. He coached the girls’ junior varsity basketball team from 1991-1996. During the 1996-1997 season he coached the varsity team. He had also worked as an assistant for the girls’ swim team beginning in 1994. In 1997 he became head coach of the girls swim team. His teams compiled a record of 171-83-3. He coached 31 All State athletes. 6 State Open champions, 2 All-Americans in 6 different events, one junior national swimmer and numerous league champions and record holders. In2006 he was named Connecticut Coach of the Year in girls swimming and started the Suffield boys swim team. Walter continued to serve as a volunteer coach for the Windsor Locks Water Jets, a recreational swim team that produced many athletes for the Suffield swim team. He has been a volunteer swim official for the Northern District Special Olympics and has served as a US Swimming coach. Walter has been a member of the CIAC State girls swim committee since 2004 and has been a member of the Hartford Board of swim officials.
 
In addition to his service to the sport of swimming, Walter became a certified track and field official. He has been the starter for the Suffield High School and Suffield Middle School track meets for over ten years and has worked as an official for other schools and for State Championship and major invitational meets. Walter also has a longtime interest in golf. Once the track season ends in the spring he has worked as a site director for the Connecticut high school golf tournaments and has been tournament Chair of the New England Boys and Girls golf committee.
 
Parents have praised his success in developing fitness, character, sportsmanship and strength in his athletes. His athletes have praised his ability to guide, encourage, support, challenge and inspire them. The title of “Father of Suffield Swimming” is a fitting tribute to his work.
