Joe Simonoko had an outstanding athletic career at Suffield High School from 1978 through 1981.  He had even more success as a starting pitcher for the University of Connecticut, becoming one of the better pitchers in the Big East Conference.  He was a three sport star at Suffield, playing Soccer, Basketball and Baseball.

During Joe’s early years he was a star baseball player in both Little League and Senior League in Suffield.  He played on undefeated teams in both leagues, and was a star pitcher as well as a starting shortstop in both leagues.  He also was named to the Little League and Senior League all-star teams.  His success as a youth would portend an even better future in athletics.
While being a strong student at Suffield High, Joe was a leader both on and off the field.  Joe played soccer for Suffield High, earning letters in 1979 and 1980.  Both of those years, Joe’s soccer teams lost in the finals of the Class M state tournament.  He was the starting goalie during his senior year.  He was also a three-year letterman in basketball at Suffield High, earning all-conference honors his senior year, while the team was winning the conference championship. He was a four-year letterman in baseball, earning all-conference honors for his final two years.  The senior captain was the number one starting pitcher, as well as one of the best shortstops in the NCCC.  He also played for the Windsor Locks Legion Baseball team, earning all-star honors for three years, and team MVP honors during his last season.

Joe’s career really blossomed during his four years playing baseball for Andy Baylock at UConn.  He was a four-year letterman, while earning a position at starting pitcher his final three years.  He was named captain at UConn for his senior year, and was one of the better starting pitchers in the Big East Conference.  He was the starting pitcher for UConn for the first game of the conference championships.  He also played in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer Baseball League for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, one of the elite summer baseball leagues in the country.
